this is a third-party companion app for WaniKani. it was designed for a single purpose: to give me additional context for the vocabulary base i've been generating through SRS/WaniKani itself.

this tool will couple itself to your WaniKani API as well as Google's Gemini generative AI (via API as well) to create a dynamically generated series of functionally infinite contexts. simple instructions for finding/creating the API keys (they're free) are in the next section.

a note on AI: of course AI is contentious and divisive, and i myself truly am unsure of how i feel about it as i sit here typing this. an important thing to keep in mind though, is that it is wrong. a lot. treat this tool as more of a "study buddy" rather than a native Japanese teacher. it is designed to help you get repetitions in with your vocabulary, but like any generative AI tool, it can (and will) make mistakes or sound unnatural. use it to build confidence, but stick to native materials for the final word on nuance.

1. WaniKani Token:
go to WaniKani Settings, generate a new token, and verify it has permissions to read assignments/subjects

2. Gemini API Key:
go to Google AI Studio and click "Create API Key" (it's free for personal use, but rate-limited)

3. Connect 'em:
paste them below (if it's your first time here) or go to the Options tab and disconnect/re-add if needed
